COLONEL COUPLE

Brandy Wright Burbante (BA ‘10) & Gilberto Burbante (BA ’11)

Brandy and Gilberto didn’t meet at Nicholls, but consider themsleves a Colonel Couple–Colonel Family now with their four-year-old son, Gunner. Brandy earned her B.A. in English Education in 2010, and Gilberto a B.S. in Government in 2011. Currently, Brandy is a Librarian/Outreach Coordinator at Ellender Memorial Library. Gilberto is Coordinator of Veterans Services at Nicholls. Their son is in Pre-K at Little Colonels Academy. Gilberto and Brandy met at Morgan City Jr. High and became high school sweethearts. They have been married for fifteen years.

The couple came to Nicholls together after Gilberto served four years in the USMC. While attending Nicholls he joined the Louisiana Army National Guard and completed OCS to become an officer. Brandy notes that “Gilberto almost missed his graduation from Nicholls because he was activated to help with the major flooding of the Mississippi River at the time. He was able to get home, change into his cap and gown from his Army uniform in order to walk in graduation.”

While at Nicholls, Brandy and Gilberto enjoyed the friendships that were made through his membership in SAE Fraternity. Brandy was a member, then president, of NEAT (Nicholls Education Association of Teachers). They have been working at Nicholls for five years and never want to leave. Brandy shares, “As non-traditional/first-generation students, we were able to get the best education and experience fun campus life in the process, which I don’t think would have been possible anywhere else but Nicholls.”
